Doctor Edge
Als het goed is heb ik een scoop en heeft The Edge vandaag inmiddels een eredoctoraat gekregen van het meest voorname conservatorium (voor Jazz mensen dan, zie Huib's Blog) in de VS.
Volgens de aankondiging van de inauguratie is vooral het gitaarspel van David Evans bepalend voor het onmiskenbare geluid van U2. Ik echo, echo, echo...:
"Guitarist with Irish rock band U2, the Edge is one of the most influential guitar players of his generation. His crystalline minimalist guitar playing, often making use of repeat echo, is the hallmark of U2's music, and one of the most original and distinctive guitar styles in rock 'n' roll history. One of the best live acts in the world, U2 has toured the globe countless times. They have released 14 studio albums and won numerous awards, including 22 Grammy Awards. One of the principal songwriters of U2, the Edge has also written extensively for other projects, often in collaboration with U2's Bono, including music for movies such as Gangs of New York and GoldenEye; for the animated Batman TV series; and for the Royal Shakespeare Company's stage adaptation of A Clockwork Orange. In 2005, the Edge cofounded Music Rising, a charity initiative that provides musical instruments for the musicians, schools, and churches of the Gulf Region." (Berklee College of Music)
Vanaf vandaag is hij niet alleen een popster met vele nummer een hits mede van zijn hand, maar ook een hoogleraar in de muziek. Van zo'n leraar wil ik ook wel gitaar leren spelen!

Wow, wat een staat van dienst! Wat is dat toch met mij dat ik de muziek van U2 niet trek???
